I composed a women’s choir piece entitled “Little Lamb, Arise” for Martin Luther College based off the hymn “I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb” in memory of babies who left their earthly homes and await their loved ones in heaven. I also wrote a series on baby loss at Holy Hen House entitled “Grief to Glory” during this time.
“Little Lamb, Arise” was streamed live during Martin Luther College’s chapel on Wednesday May 8 at 10:45 and also during MLC’s commencement concerts on May 17 at 4:00 and 7:40pm.
My piece begins at 39:00. Click here to listen.
Little Lamb, Arise
text from “I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb” text by Henrietta L. von Hayn, 1724-82
Isaiah 40:10, Isaiah 26:19 & Ephesians 5:14
I am Jesus’ little lamb, ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me, knows my needs and well provides me,
Loves me every day the same even calls me by my name.
Day by day, at home, away, Jesus is my staff and stay.
When I hunger, Jesus feeds me.
When I thirst He bids me go, where the quiet waters flow.
So do not fear for I am with you;
Do not be dismayed for I’m your God.
I will strengthen you. I will help you.
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Who so happy as I am, even now the Shepherd’s lamb.
And when my short life is ended, by His angel host attended.
He shall fold me to His breast. Hold me there within His arms to rest.
Arise. Arise. Arise.
Our dead will live their bodies will rise.
You who dwell in dust wake up, wake up!
Arise and shout for joy! Shout for joy!
Like the morning dew Christ makes all things new.
He shall fold me to His breast, there within His arms to rest.
